#Simple comic strip full#I like to separate the two so I can give my full attention to one or the other. I'm sure this varies from cartoonist to cartoonist I find that the writing is the hard part and the drawing is the fun part. Watterson: I write separately from the inking up. Q: When you sit down at the drawing table, though, do you do one at a time or just keep going? Keep in mind that comic strips are typically written in a certain amount of panic, and I made it all up as I went along. In any given strip, the amount of invention varied. Often I used the strip to talk about things that interested me as an adult, and of course, a lot of Calvin's adventures were drawn simply because I thought the idea was funny. While Calvin definitely reflects certain aspects of my personality, I never had imaginary animal friends, I generally stayed out of trouble, I did fairly well in school, etc., so the strip is not literally autobiographical. Q: Are the adventures of Calvin and Hobbes similar to your own childhood, or is the strip a way for you to create stories you never experienced as a kid?Ī: I'd say the fictional and nonfictional aspects were pretty densely interwoven. A lot of things have to go right all at once. I can't explain why the strip caught on the way it did, and I don't think I could ever duplicate it. You mix a bunch of ingredients, and once in a great while, chemistry happens. I just tried to write honestly, and I tried to make this little world fun to look at, so people would take the time to read it. Everyone responds differently to different parts. Once the strip is published, readers bring their own experiences to it, and the work takes on a life of its own. What readers take away from it is up to them. Q: With almost 15 years of separation and reflection, what do you think it was about "Calvin and Hobbes" that went beyond just capturing readers' attention, but their hearts as well?Ī: The only part I understand is what went into the creation of the strip. Herschel's voice gets louder, "WHAT? Big Billy is aggitated but responds again, "I SAID, THAT'S SILLY!!" Herschel looks at Buzzy and says, "can you hear what Billy is saying Buzz?" Buzz responds, "did Big Billy say somethin'?" Oh my God, it's true, it's really happenin'." "Here, you guys can play til' I see a doctor." "Buzzy says to Herschel, "How do you do that?" Herschel smiles and says, "it's like taking candy from a baby!" "I'll have him out of here in no time." Herschel walks over to Big Billy and says: "Ya know, it's a proven fact that playin' a pinball machine too long causes you to lose your ability to communicate." Billy responds, "that's silly!" "What?", says Herschel. Buzzy and Herschel were making their way to Harry's, all fired up to play the pinball machine, until they noticed Big Billy was already flippin' and shakin' the big metal balls for all he was worth.ĭialogue - "Heck Herschel, he's gonna be playin' that thing all day!" "Not a problem", says Herschel. You can spend an entire day in Harry's and not spend more than 50 cents (10 big bottles). Harry's has all the basic food groups for kids: ice cream, soda pop, chewing gum, candy, and best of all a pinball machine. Situation - Harry's candy store is the "mecca" for street kids.

Secretary General Chrisjen Avasarala and Belter leader Camina Drummer. Given the animosity between Earth and the Belt, particularly after the Inaros attacks, it’s telling that one of the most radical gestures made in Season 6 is a simple handshake between two political figures: U.N. The crew of the Rocinante-James Holden, Amos Burton, and Naomi Nagata, who are joined this season by Clarissa Mao and Bobbie Draper-live up to that ideal by being from Earth, Mars, and the Belt. But even in its darkest moments, the show has an underlying optimism in the power of the collective and good triumphing over evil when characters set aside their differences. Throughout its run, The Expanse never shied away from the kinds of atrocities human beings can commit in the name of power, prejudice, or corporate greed: In addition to Inaros’s attacks on Earth, we’ve seen refugees tossed out of airlocks and children experimented on with protomolecule samples. Time and again, characters are so narrowly focused on where a person comes from, rather than defining them by their actions. What’s brilliant about The Expanse is how it can elicit genuine sympathy for each faction-the Earthers lost millions of lives to Inaros’s asteroid attacks the Martians’ long-held dream of terraforming Mars was extinguished after the discovery of habitable planets like Laconia the Belters have long been oppressed as the solar system’s working class-while at the same time introducing power-hungry villains from each group. Much of The Expanse’s final season finds Earthers, Martians, and Belters clinging to a history of tribalism that prevents them from rallying against a common enemy. #THE EXPANSE SERIES SERIES#It focused on its ragtag heroes trying to usher in an era of peace for the solar system by stopping the Belter terrorist Marco Inaros, who successfully killed millions of Earthers through a series of asteroid attacks in Season 5. In its final season, The Expanse traded protomolecule-related conflicts with big-picture implications. And while both series have a massive scope, The Expanse showed a greater ability to reel in its story-even as it teased out events on Laconia that serve as the foundation for the final three novels in the series after a 30-year time jump.īut for all the intrigue surrounding the protomolecule, The Expanse has always been more invested in humanity and how mankind’s three factions-Earthers, Martians, and Belters-treat alien technology that can be used (and abused) to consolidate power. For one, The Expanse isn’t being afforded the opportunity to adapt every existing book of source material, which delves even further into the protomolecule and its origins. (In retrospect, maybe that would’ve been better than how it actually ended.) But for all the DNA they share, The Expanse is not Thrones. The doom that underlined each scene never materializes a looming threat disintegrates into a whisper.įor a show that is frequently compared to Game of Thrones, this resolution (or lack thereof) would be like if the HBO series ended without addressing the White Walkers. The last vignette sees the little girl and her zombified brother, who was struck by a vehicle earlier in the season, running deeper into the Laconian wilderness toward an uncertain future-one that is unlikely to ever be resolved on-screen. And anyone familiar with Stephen King’s Pet Sematary-let alone the countless times that meddling with the protomolecule has nearly led to extinction-level events on The Expanse-can assume that using “dogs” to resurrect the dead probably won’t end well.īut while The Expanse’s final episode dutifully closes the loop on many of its lingering plot threads and political conflicts, the protomolecule-influenced events on Laconia amount to nothing more than an ellipsis. It’s clear to the viewer that this scientific miracle is the work of the protomolecule, the mysterious alien substance that has propelled The Expanse’s expansive (sorry) story line farther into the cosmos. The vignettes center on a little girl interacting with alien wildlife and making a confounding discovery: a dog-like species that can seemingly bring the dead back to life. Each episode of the sixth and final season of The Expanse opens on Laconia, a newly colonized planet in the far reaches of space. #Fontbook ipad plus#In this view you have a scrollable list with related fonts on the left and five sheets with examples that you can drag in from the right.įor every font you get a type sample poster, an interactive three-size type sample player, sorted type sample in display size plus alphabet, sorted type sample in text size, the complete character set and a summary of font info: more than enough to make an informed font choice. Once you have selected a specific typeface you are presented with the actual type specimen. For the largest tiles the app even adds a little overlay that displays the actual numbers of fonts inside (477 in Frutiger’s case) but for some reason these wouldn’t show up in the screenshots the app lets you take. You can see right away that Linotype has more fonts listed than ITC and Adrian Frutiger more than Julia Friese. One smart UI decision was to have the size of the different areas (let’s call them “tiles”) correspondent roughly to the number of results inside these tiles, thereby giving relevance to the search result even before you actually tap on it. From each of these selections you can then drill down deeper until you reach your desired typeface. The initial menu gives access to FontShops vast catalogue via five large tappable areas: ALPHABETICAL, DESIGNER, CLASSES, FOUNDRY and YEAR. Freed from the constraint of a sequential medium the FontBook now offers several approaches to discovering and finding typefaces. I’m not picking this thing up when I leave the house to visit a client.įontshop has taken its massive font database with over 620,000 entries and put it on Apple’s tablet with a clean and intuitive UI. My 1998 edition, containing over 25,000 fontspecimens, weighs a hefty 2.5 kg and is about 5,6 cm thick. This not only made it comprehensive, it also meant that the FontBook wasn’t exactly portable. The FontBook exemplified an encyclopedic approach: If a font existed somewhere, it was probably listed in the FontBook. Not only for referencing and searching specific typefaces, but also for self-education by simply skimming through the pages at random, marveling at the breadth of available forms and styles and finding inspiration in this seemingly inexhaustible repository of typographic creativity. The original FontBook – first published two decades ago in 1991 - has been an indispensable tool for designers everywhere. These are my first impressions after a two days of moderate use. #Fontbook ipad code#I was fortunate to be given a review code and so I have been able to kick the tires a little. Tonight at 6:00 pm CET, typographic legend Erik Spiekermann flipped a switch and FontShop released the FontBookApp for Apple's iPad on the App Store. To make this easy I’ve set the amount I need to transfer into the shortcode “/tax”. That causes me to procrastinate and sometimes forget to do it all together. My problem is I can never remember how much that is. However, I also have to remember to go to my personal account and transfer a percentage of that amount back into another account for quarterly tax payments. To do that I have to log into my business bank account and create a transfer from that account to my personal account.

His mastery of quality with the perfect amount of quantity, is something that I look to achieving and translating into other mediums of art. Not to mention he has a great art-style that fits perfectly for what he makes. Aside from that, his games have a great way of implied story telling, based on your surroundings, that give you an idea of what has happened, without actually saying much. He has enough content in his games to keep it exciting and new, without anything being too much or too little – the perfect amount to enjoy. His content is something that I’ve consistently enjoyed for over a decade. * Derek Yu is an indie game developer, who in my opinion, is and example of perfected craft. His art-style, character development, situational creativity, originality, and story progression, is something I look towards as a point of reference for what’s good. I’ve been a huge fan of his work for a long time. #Desperados 3 rosie series* Hirohiko Araki is a Manga artist from Japan, who made the popular, active-running series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. I get inspiration from all over the creative spectrum, but if I had to narrow it down to a few people, I would go with Hirohiko Araki, Herbie Hancock, and Derek Yu. Who are some of your artistic inspirations? Experimenting with poses, facial expressions, lighting, clothing, and more – in order to represent a feeling or to describe a scene without the use of words, is something I’ve always had fun with, and I’m always seeking to get better at. What’s bad: The plot can move a little slowly at times.I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, but I started drawing comics in elementary school with my friends. What’s good: Love the cupcake recipes scattered throughout the book – can’t wait to try one out. These are well-written, non-offensive and highly enjoyable books for pre- and young teens. And finally, a big wedding announcement leads the way into the next book, Something New. Hayley also begins to show that she may have a crush on someone. In this installment, the big plot event is a talent show, and it brings Artie back into the picture. Hayley still misses time with her ex-BFF, Artie, but loves spending time with her new BFF, Meghan. They still miss spending time with their father, but things are getting better. This installment of “Confectionately Yours” picks up when Hayley and her family are settling into their new lives. What’s bad: Children ready for chills won’t even find goose bumps here. What’s good: Energetic plots and monsters will encourage reluctant readers to ask for more. What will happen as Alexander takes on the creepy balloon goons with twisty arms? Although they are slightly creepy, these books are not as scary as “Goosebumps.” None of the tales in this series will cause nightmares, but they will cause your children to read some more. It’s funny and fast with enjoyable black and white illustrations. When the new kid in town, Alexander, stumbles upon the “notebook of doom,” he uncovers top secret information on monsters-lots and lots of monsters. Now children can enjoy this series, as well as “Looniverse” and “Boris on the Move.” This is an easy-to-read story that doesn’t speak down to the reader but involves him in high-interest plot content. Scholastic’s early chapter book line keeps expanding. The Notebook of Doom: Rise of the Balloon Goons What’s good: Gentle text and vintage-style illustrations make this a very soothing tale. Children will easily be able to see their own behavior in Rosie’s adventure and learn that facing things you fear with someone you love can make overcoming your fears a little easier. Salerno’s illustrations evoke a vintage feel fans of Curious George will find very pleasing. There is a lovely tone to this take with soft lyrical text that offers as much interest as the illustrations. Eventually, they huddle together in his bedroom until the storm passes. She thinks he might be a little scared too. Rosie’s boy tries his best to comfort her with singing but it does little good. She looks all over but she knows the thunder can still see her. But when thunder begins to rumble, Rosie goes scurrying for cover. She’s not afraid of tigers, orangutans (at least pictures of them), baths or even the postman. and Canada, one-year data recording and integration with over 60 business applications. It’s worth the effort to research different brands to see what will work best for your customers. Metra AV is also a well-respected brand in the industry. Xantech Corporation has been in the IR repeater business a long time, as has Russound. One of the best ways to avoid these common problems is to use a brand with an excellent reputation. Solution: For custom installers who want to avoid repeat calls, the use of hardwired, IR systems is recommended. Wireless IR and 2-Way IP systems have pitfalls of their own in terms of reliability.Solution: Use of ultra-high-quality electronic parts and materials and careful manufacturing processes up and down the system chain. Cheap materials and/or poor manufacturing tolerances used in kit components can affect performance, electronic and/or optical integrity and long-term reliability.Solution: Use of better-quality components and circuitry that identifies and removes unwanted noise and interference to generate a dead-on accurate signal transmission, without noise or distortion. Tech shortcuts can compromise the accuracy of the precise carrier frequency required to operate the electronics.Solution: The receiver needs to be able to block or filter weird signals and correct possible distorted signals. Random, spurious, or very-high frequency signals of unknown origin.Solution: Emitters and the receiver need to be able to filter and adapt to ambient lighting conditions. LED, LCD, plasma TVs, CFL lighting, and even daylight are potential troublemakers. Light sources can generate interference with IR sensors. The newest RCMM protocol operates on 36 kHz. Solution: Emitters need to be able to work both 30 kHz to 43 kHz and 44 kHz to 60 kHz spreads, the 2 most frequently used spectrums. Not all devices use an identical frequency. The carrier frequency spreads used for electronic components. There are solutions, but not all infrared repeater systems on the market effectively deal with every issue. Its signal needs to be in line of sight with the sensors and an IR remote extender solves that problem, but there can still be installation issues. However, if the electronics are tucked away in a cabinet or placed in a different room than the TV, a universal remote won’t work. That’s a lot of remotes to juggle.Ī universal remote would seem to be the obvious solution. Some remotes operate off of Wi-Fi, too, but most of these have an IR sensor that communicates with its individual remote. Today, a typical home theater setup consists of a TV, cable, or satellite receiver, a streaming device connected to Wi-Fi such as an Amazon Fire Stick or Google Chromecast, and a game console or Blu-ray player. What about an IR Repeater system? When to use an IR repeater system Housewives of the era discovered that, much to their amusement, their vacuum cleaners sometimes generated frequencies that turned TVs on or off! Today, infrared, Bluetooth, RF, IP, and voice control all vie for a piece of the remote pie. #IR REPEATER TV#First-generation wireless TV remotes used ultrasonic tones.
